If there's one thing Chile is known for around the world, besides Pedro Pascal and Don Francisco, it's the wine produced in our territory. But did you know that vodka is also produced here, and not just any vodka, it's Kawesqar , the vodka made with Patagonian potatoes.
It is precisely the Coyhaique region where Yuliyan Popov, a Bulgarian, arrived. He envisioned the cold southern lands of our country as the perfect place to create the vodka that is called the southernmost in the world.
This is a 100% handmade product made with local raw materials and a traditional process that Yuliyan is deeply proud of.
But how does a Bulgarian end up making vodka with Patagonian potatoes? That's what Yuliyan Popov, the creator of the distillery that brings Kawesqar to the world, told BioBioChile.
Yuliyan Popov: The Bulgarian who created Kawesqar vodka
The man responsible for creating Kawesqar vodka in Patagonia is Yuliyan Popov. The producer was born in Bulgaria, but arrived in Chile 25 years ago and liked it so much that he ended up staying in our country.
With perfect Spanish, but with an accent reminiscent of his Balkan origins, Popov says he lived in Santiago for 19 years. He found love in the capital and started a family with his wife, while he worked as an engineer and dedicated himself to the telecommunications industry.
